Frickenmia is a Brooklyn-based DJ who’s spent 7 years building community in the underground scene before hopping behind the decks in 2023. Their sets traverse genres from psytrance, to tribal, to bass, and hypnotic techno, but promises a consistent percussive groove throughout. They’re also a cofounder of @itstwentyfoursevenwithyou, a party + DJ duo that champions thoughtful curation + creating safe spaces.

  1. When did you start DJing/producing, and what sounds or scenes shaped your taste early on? What keeps you coming back to sound as a medium?

    I first picked up a controller back in 2023. At the time I had felt really disillusioned by the fine art world, and lost my inspiration to paint. I filled this gap in my life with dance music, running the Basement/ Nowies circuit on loop, and I fell in love with the community I found in those spaces. I’ve experimented with sound a lot in my visual art practice, but I keep coming back to mixing because there’s something really magical about the energy exchange that happens on the dance floor.

  2. How has your sound changed over time — and what shaped those shifts?

    Lowkey, when I first started, horsegiirL was the blueprint. I was leaning into speed, humor and nostalgia to hype up a crowd. These days, I’ve slowed down the BPM and put a lot more focus into blending textures. It’s kind of been a full 180.

  3. It’s 24/7 with you: How do you think about the role your party series plays in the scene — socially, culturally, or politically?

    I started throwing these parties with 9to5000 with 2 main objectives: creating safe spaces and getting the local talent paid. (Of course, curating the sound is a massive priority to us as well.)
Dance music + raving is inherently political, and now more than ever we need to protect each other and keep dancing.

  4. I’ve been having a weekly dose of inspo watching your music curation videos! What motivated you to start the project?

    I kind of started this project back in 2022 when I was building the social media strategy for Elsewhere. I found an opportunity to talk about the things I am really passionate about to an attentive audience and hopped on it. When I left Elsewhere, I really missed doing it but it took me a full year to muster up the courage to start my own channel. My goal as it grows is to continue amplifying the voices of artists + sharing important history that is often overlooked.
