Sam Valle is a dynamic NYC-based DJ and producer whose musical journey began in San Francisco in 2018. Her talent quickly garnered attention, leading to her becoming a finalist in EDC’s Discovery Project (@discoveryprjct) in 2020. Now a resident DJ with the VHS (Village Hidden in Sound) collective (@villagehiddeninsound), Sam is known for her versatility behind the decks, blending genres with a signature style rooted in Techno and Tech House. Her high-energy sets have lit up some of New York City’s most iconic venues, including Silo, Bossa Nova Civic Club, Jupiter Disco, and Rash.

  1. You started DJing in San Francisco and later moved to New York — how did SF shape you early on, and how has NYC reshaped you since?

    SF and the Bay Area hold such a deep place in my heart for giving me community during some of my darkest moments and helping me realize how deeply I love music. I started going to events at 16 and fell in love with the underground and the way sound can create visceral, atmospheric experiences. After years on the dancefloor, I took a chance on myself in 2018 and began learning to DJ. I started in tech house, chasing the tension and connection it brings, and being part of NYC’s community later helped me truly find my sound. After years of searching, I’ve found home in creating and playing techno.

  2. How has your sound changed over time — and what shaped those shifts?

    Over the last 7 years, my sound has grown and evolved through learning and exploring new genres. A lot of that comes from my track discovery days (which I LOVE to do hehe) and from spending time spinning with friends. Going b2b is one of my favorite things because it teaches me new ways to mix while discovering and sharing music together.

  3. As a VHS (Village Hidden in Sound) resident, what’s something about that collective that’s been especially meaningful to you lately?

    VHS has given me a sense of family and belonging in the scene that means so much to me. This collective is made up of some of the kindest and most talented people, and I’m so proud to know and create alongside them. VHS works hard to create safe, fun, and inclusive spaces while giving back through fundraisers and community work. I love my family and am so grateful to be part of VHS.

  4. When you’re not playing, where do you go to get inspired? Who’s been exciting you lately?

    Oh! This is such a good question! I love spending time in museums and getting lost in works by artists like Rembrandt, Renoir, Goya, and Gauguin. The MET is my favorite place to visit because its range of art and mediums always sparks inspiration. I also love watching films and disappearing into new stories. Immersing myself in visual and audio art helps me tune in and transmute what I want to create and share through music.

  5. You’ve played NYC and cities like Montreal/Barcelona/Tokyo — what feels different from place to place, and what stays constant in you?

    Each scene has its own vibe shaped by the culture it’s part of, but what always remains is the passion for the music. This shared passion is what connects us all and something I absolutely love being part of. Creating and sharing that feeling with the community is incredibly important to me.

  6. How are you approaching the arc of your radio set — emotionally and conceptually?

    For this evening’s mix, I’m starting a little moody and gradually building the energy with hypnotic, groovy elements. I’m also excited to incorporate a new project I’ve been working on for the past five months. At the core of every set, I just want to lose myself and have fun. <3
