Seelie is a Brooklyn-based DJ and co-founder of @vortex.bklyn, a collective committed to the dance floor as a site of resistance and renewal. Rooted in techno but unbound by genre, she crafts immersive sets through atmosphere and storytelling, striving to transform the dance floor into a space for communal catharsis.

  1. Why did you start DJing? What sounds or scenes shaped your taste early on?

    Before I knew anything about the underground rave/club/dance scene, I was solely a listener. Global Communication’s 76:14, Voices From the Lake’s self-titled Voices From the Lake, and Prince of Denmark’s 8 were all seminal moments in my electronic music journey. To this day, listening through these albums from start to finish were some of the most profound experiences of my life. I was drawn to DJing because I felt that this music has a transformative power, and I wanted to share that experience with others.

  2. What do you pay the most attention to while you’re mixing?

    Track selection. I spend hours preparing specific playlists for my sets, intently listening to each track multiple times to understand the story it’s telling. For me, mixing is all about piecing together tracks that can be experienced as a continuous, cohesive journey for the listener or the dancefloor.

  3. When you’re not playing, where do you go to get inspired? Who’s been exciting you lately?

    I go directly to the source - the underground labels and producers releasing the music that guides and inspires my sound. Qilla Records, Techlab.bp, and Aurora Mystica are labels that I can always count on when I’m searching for new tracks. The producers I’ve been most excited by lately are AYIM, AWHM, and Pire Meilleur. Their tracks have been playing pivotal roles in all my recent sets.

  4. I’ve been enjoying listening to your Vortex mix series on SoundCloud! What inspired you to start the project? What’s your vision behind it for the coming year?

    The SoundCloud mix series started simply as an archive of the mixes my partner and I played at our own underground parties. Later on when we formed Vortex collective, it became a space to showcase mixes from our whole crew. We recently started inviting guests to contribute to the series, with the goal of building community and connecting with both local and international DJs and producers that we admire. Connecting with other artists through this platform has been so energizing, and I’m so excited for the releases we have lined up for the year.
